The new California Legislature is sworn in

Republicans were a bit scarce in the legislative chambers Monday as the newest California lawmakers were sworn in. Democrats hold super-majorities in both the 40-member state Senate and the 80-member Assembly.

But our local delegation has a Republican tilt, with newcomers Jim Patterson of Fresno and Frank Bigelow of Madera County representing area Assembly seats. They will join the Republican caucus, along with Assembly GOP Leader Connie Conway of Tulare, who is returning for another legislative term. Local Democrats are Assembly Member Henry T. Perea of Fresno and Assembly Member Rudy Salas of Bakersfield.

Patterson, Bigelow and Salas were amongĀ 40 freshmen legislators sworn in on Monday.

The AP reported that Republicans will have “just 11 seats in the 40-member Senate and at least 25 seats in the 80-member Assembly, although a handful of races remain undecided.”

Kim Tanksley says:

It will be interesting to see how things progress; if at all. Maybe I am a skeptic but even with one party having such a significant majority,I bet there will still be gridlock. No one will have the fortitude to make the changes we need. This is an opportunity for the Democratic party to expose those over the top liberals within their party and pull them back toward a more rational center. It is an opportunity to prove that their path will work (I dont believe it will personally). If they cant or dont then we will know that the Democratic party as it was meant to be and as those of us who have left it had supported, is truly dead and gone.

Brian Murray says:

As far as the Democrats go, When someone shows you who they are…believe it.

Kim Tanksley says:

May I correct your typo? It should read “as far as anyone goes” because I believe that all people should be responsible for their actions and all people should by judged as individuals.

Brian Murray says:

Kim…if I was wanting to be a jerk I’d point out it wasn’t a typo but a correctly spelled observation and to check your own spelling once or twice prior to posting…oops, I’m a jerk.

Brian Murray says:

Kim…I agree with your responsibility statement but I was talking about the Democrats and the whimsical notion being promoted that they know better than to over reach…sorry for being a jerk…but again, when someone shows you who they are…
